A MEMORIAL to the Swindon boy killed in a 'hit and run' incident is being created on Akers Way.

Hundreds of people from the town have left tributes in the wake of Saturday's heartbreaking announcement from police that the 14-year-old hit by a car near Nova Hreod Academy the previous morning had died.

Bunches of flowers have been left at the scene, as well as photographs, a Ferndale Rodbourne football shirt and a Manchester United scarf, tied to the railings next to the busy road.

The mood on Sunday morning was sombre and reflective as people gathered to pay their respects.

Many Swindonians shared their sorrow and thoughts for the boy's family on Facebook.

Swindon Advertiser:

“An absolute tragedy for his family and friends, thoughts are with them at this sad time,” commented  one Adver reader.

“Another cruel reminder of how precious life really is, he must be so loved judging by the amount of people paying their respects as I drove past earlier,” said another.

"Condolences for the family and friends of this young boy, may you rest in peace young man,” added another.

Another reader said: "This is too heartbreaking. I have an 14-year-old boy and cannot imagine what this poor family is going through. I know it will never be enough but my deepest sympathy to his family."

The teenager was knocked down by a car on Akers Way at around 8.20am on Friday morning.

He was rushed to hospital in Bristol by air ambulance with what police described as critical injuries.

Wiltshire Police have since confirmed the boy's death.

A police spokesman said: "A 14-year-old boy has been sadly pronounced dead, despite the best efforts of medical staff, following a road traffic collision in Swindon, yesterday morning.

"Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the teenager at this incredibly difficult time, and we would ask that their privacy is respected.

"We are continuing to appeal for witnesses to the tragic incident which took place at about 8.20am on Akers Way when the boy was hit by a car which failed to stop at the scene."
