Swindon Town were among the clubs represented at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, as one of their star players was selected for the tournament.

Jonny Williams was chosen by Wales manager Rob Page to represent his country in their first World Cup since 1958.

The 29-year-old had previously featured at both Euro 2016 and Euro 2020, reaching the semi-final stage in the former.

Sadly, it was not to be as Wales exited the competition at the group stage this week following defeats to Iran and rivals England - and Williams didn't play a minute.

Despite the team’s early departure from Qatar, the Swindon star was upbeat and reflected upon his World Cup outing positively in an Instagram post on Thursday evening.

“An amazing experience to go to a World Cup with Wales,” said Williams on Instagram.

“To be a part of this special team that got Wales to our first World Cup in 64 years will stay with me forever and something we mustn't forget.

“I'm very grateful to have been a part of this squad, an incredible group of players and staff. Two European championships and a World Cup, I feel very blessed. Thank you to all of the fans for your amazing support on this amazing journey.”

Williams will return to Swindon but Town’s game against Crawley on Saturday will come too soon for the Welshman, who will instead be integrated into training next week.
