A kebab shop in Swindon which had previously been rated just one star has seen its food hygiene rating rise massively in the last week.

Supreme Doner Kebab of 35 Bridge Street had been given the lowly rating following an inspection in November of last year, leaving the owner, Rizu Ahmed, furious with the verdict.

He told the Adver at the time that the flat above his shop had been stealing his electricity and he was forced to close for two weeks whilst their supply was fixed.

“I think it is preposterous that they have given us one star, especially after what the business has gone through,” said Mr Ahmed at the time.

“There was no mention of uncleanliness or vermin in the report, but rather out of date food.

“There’s no surprise that the dates were off because we were closed for two weeks through no fault of our own.”

The Food Standards Agency came to inspect the premises on the same day as Mr Ahmed and his team were allowed back into the premises, and the lowly score of one was awarded.

This has since been changed in a recent inspection of Supreme Doner Kebab and the eatery has been awarded an extra three stars, taking its rating to a much healthier four.

“What the local authority did was absolutely ridiculous and we contacted our lawyers,” said Mr Ahmed.

“To turn a restaurant from a one star to a four star in just a few weeks shows that something wasn’t quite right.”

The effect of the poor one star rating negatively impacted Supreme Doner Kebab’s business massively at a very busy time of the year.

“We were taken off a lot of delivery platforms such as Uber Eats because of the unfair and non-reflective report that we received,” said Mr Ahmed.

“During Christmas especially was a tough blow because it is a busy time and we lost a lot of business and money.”

The change in fortunes has been welcomed by Supreme Doner Kebab but the team still feel very hard done by with regard to the initial damaging inspection.

“We always knew our level of cleanliness was five stars,” explained Mr Ahmed.

“We still do not know why it is [not] five stars but we are happy that this turnaround has occurred.”

Supreme Doner Kebab, which only arrived in Swindon last year, offers a wide range of kebabs, wraps and more and will now operate under the improved four stars.
