"At least no one was hurt and we're all safe, my bike is replaceable"
Those were the words of a devastated ten-year-old who had his hard-earned bike stolen, along with two others belonging to his father, Dan Winfield.
Dan, 36, had posted messages on social media asking for help from the public in tracking their bikes down, where he shared the heart-breaking reaction from his son.
The theft took place from Dan's home in Omdurman Street, off of Ferndale Road, sometime between 10pm on January 6 and 7.30am on January 7.
Thieves broke a hole into the side of Dan's garage, where there were two bikes belonging to other people that were having work done, the thieves ignored these and then used Dan's tools to remove the shed door from its hinges to gain access to his family's bikes.
They removed the locks from the bikes and manoeuvred them around Dan's car and out the garage door.
"There are marks heading across South Brook playing fields and the Venny and we found our shed door alarm smashed at the other end of the alleyway nearby," Dan said.
Dan revealed that one of the bikes taken, a green Kawasaki kx 85 small wheel, belonged to his 10-year-old son Haydon, who had sold his old bike and done chores to make up the difference in the price and has only had the new bike for six months.
Dan's KTM sx 125 2003 was also taken, which he bought as a project and rebuilt from the frame up and had only just got it running.
Also taken was a YT Industries full-suspension mountain bike with lots of upgrades.
Dan estimates the total cost of the bikes taken, and the custom parts on them, is around £4,600. But he said the hardest thing was having to tell Haydon what had happened.
"I had to sit him down and tell him that he did everything right but unfortunately someone took a liking to his pride and joy and decided that it looked better on them.
"This was by far one of the hardest things I have ever had to do as a father. But his response got me the most, he said 'at least no one was hurt and we're all safe, my bike is replaceable.'"
Dan added that the keen motorbiking family would not replace them, as it was no longer safe to do so.
