A road outside a Swindon school is undergoing improvements to ensure the safety of the pupils.

Greenmeadow Primary School on Haydon Wick’s Pen Close has been identified for inclusion in Year 3 of the School Safe Environment Zones (SSEZ) programme.

The SSEZ programme is the Council’s approach to delivering road safety and congestion improvements for schools across Swindon over the next 5 years.

It is anticipated that SSEZs will encompass a package of measures that aim to encourage behavioural change and improve safety outside and in the vicinity of schools.

The design of each SSEZ will be bespoke to the circumstances and characteristics of each school, its location and the current behaviours of its pupils and parents/carers.

The work at Pen Close commenced on Wednesday, February 1, and is scheduled to run until Monday, February 20, just in time for the return of pupils following the half term break.

The work will include removing double yellow lines and replacing them with a 'school keep clear' sign as well as refreshing the existing double yellow and adding new double yellow lines.

Several other 'school keep clear' signs will be implemented and updates to the flashing ambers will also be carried out at the site.

There are several listed reasons for this development including avoiding danger to persons or other traffic using the road or any other road or for preventing the likelihood of any such danger arising.

Another reason given is to facilitate the passage on the road, or any other road of any class of traffic, which includes pedestrians.

The preserving or improving of the amenities of the area through which the road runs and to assist with the free flow of traffic as well as to improve the environment for local residents, are all listed also.

Councillor David Renard said: "I have been working with Greenmeadow Primary School, highways officers and local residents over many years to continually improve the safety of children in the vicinity of the school.

“The latest review will add further measures in the form of a School Safety Environment Zone. This follows a visit to the school during the morning drop off when I discussed the issues with the Head teacher, highways officers and Cllr Jackson.

“I welcome these improvements which will make children safer at the key times of day."
