Fire engines and police cars filled a town centre street this morning.
Officers blocked the right turn from the B4006 onto Upham Road at around 9.45am.
Engines from three fire stations, along with two unmarked police cars and two marked police cars blocked the road, with cordons in place to prevent traffic passing.
Firefighters spoke to residents of one semi-detached house and dropped off information leaflets to neighbours.
The garage, front door and windows on the ground and first floor were opened, with a smell of burning wafting out from the property.
The road reopened at around 11.20am after the cordons were removed and fire engines left the scene.
No-one was injured.
A Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service spokeswoman said: "We received a call at 9.49am this morning about a property fire on Upham Road, Old Walcot.
"Crews from Swindon, Stratton and Westlea attended the incident which involved a fire on the ground floor of the property.
"Four breathing apparatus wearers used hose reel jets to extinguish the fire – our stop came through at 10.44am."
