A major Swindon road will be inaccessible all night as roadworks are set to be carried out at the site.

The A419 is set to be closed between 8pm on Monday, February 20, and 6am of Tuesday, February 21.

The road had suffered major delays throughout Monday morning with one lane closed on the northbound carriageway since Friday.

This in turn led to vehicles backing up for several hundred metres and traffic being held at a standstill.

A National Highways spokesperson said: "We’ve got a 300m section of lane 1 of the A419 closed near Commonhead.

"The closure has been in place since Friday afternoon for safety reasons due to a carriageway defect in lane 1.

"Emergency repairs and resurfacing are planned for tonight under a full closure, 8pm-6am, and clearly signed diversion routes will be in place for the overnight resurfacing work."

One driver told the Adver: "Initially I thought it must have been vehicles diverting with the M4 closed further down the road at Chippenham but it appears one lane is closed on the flyover at Commonhead which is backing traffic up.

“It's causing a bit of chaos on the roundabout, but thankfully everyone was driving sensibly."

The problem is in the same stretch of road that was shut overnight for emergency works last month.

National Highways found what it described as “a safety critical pothole” on the A419 on the flyover over the Commonhead Roundabout.

It was discovered that the pothole was a lot deeper than first thought.

The work, which took place on January 13, did not fix the issue for good.

Andrew Gale, Service Delivery Manager for National Highways, said: “We’ve been monitoring the defect since the original repair and identified that further work is needed to resolve the issue.”

When it was first discovered, the pothole was not expected to require the lengthy work that it has since had but this changed in late January following further inspection by National Highways.

The work ran over and led to major delays in rush hour, as commuters on the busy stretch of road diverted through Swindon.

A spokesperson for National Highways at the time said: “The pothole repair required deeper excavation than originally planned, and the road will be reopened as soon as it’s safe to do so, by early afternoon.”
