SEVERAL local charities got together to receive their share of an amount fundraised by the Swindon community.

Swindon Community Together AID was set up by councillor Bazil Solomon, who initially wanted to help those caught up in warfare in Ukraine, but expanded his reach to all refugees and those struggling with the cost of living.

Thanks to donations by members of the public, Coun Solomon was able to raise a total of £1,547.59 which is being shared between seven worth local causes.

These include the Polish Community Centre, Best Be A Better You, Phoenix Enterprises, The Shop in Cavendish Square, Bernardos in Cavendish Square, Swindon Radio 105.5 and Sounds Like Women.

Representatives of all of these charities met at the Polish Community Centre for a 'Coffee & Cake' event this month, where they also received their cheques.

Coun Solomon said: "It was great meeting up with the many charities that have supported/support Swindon Community Together AID.

"At the meeting, we planned for work ahead and for upcoming events. We mostly listened to each charity describe their work and personal stories."

He added that the group are now looking at ways to help those affected by the earthquakes in Turkey and Syria.
