The details of a major car crash in Swindon have been revealed by police.

Wiltshire Police said a car was driving on Cricklade Road in the early hours of Saturday morning without its lights on.

The driver then failed to stop for police officers and proceeded to crash into a nearby shop on the road.

Michael’s Workwear LTD’s shopfront has been left smashed with the brickwork exposed and glass smashed.

The driver has been taken to hospital, but his injuries are not described as life changing or life threatening.

No one has been arrested, police confirmed.

A Wiltshire Police spokesperson said: “We responded to reports of a vehicle being driven very slowly without lights on Cricklade Road, Swindon in the early hours of this morning (04/03).

“After failing to stop for our officers the vehicle collided with a building causing a gas leak.

“Our colleagues from the Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service have been working with gas engineers where both the building and gas pipe were made safe overnight.

“The driver was taken to hospital to be treated for injuries that are not life-changing or life-threatening.

“The road has been closed while the area has been made safe and to allow for the collision investigation.”

Cricklade Road has since been closed for the whole morning of Saturday with no public vehicles allowed access to the road and pedestrian access limited as well.
