A 13-year-old who was arrested last week in Swindon following a high-speed bike chase is set to undergo a youth restorative intervention (YRI) as a punishment.

PCSOs were patrolling the area on Tuesday, February 28, at around 8pm when they came across the young man on Lady Lane.

The teenager was dressed all in black, wearing a balaclava and a hooded coat, and made off on his bike.

He was apprehended, but became aggressive before making off again.

Another chase ensued on bikes before several police cars also joined in, tracking the teen down to Redhouse Way where he was physically wrestled to the ground by officers and arrested for assaulting two police officers.

An update from Wiltshire Police said: “Our Police Community Support Officer deal with people who are acting suspiciously, especially when they are lurking in the dark wearing a balaclava, then zoom off as soon as they see us.

“The 13-year-old who was arrested earlier this week in Redhouse has been referred for Youth Restorative Intervention.

“A specially trained team will be working with him as part of an early intervention programme to consider his behaviour, what harm it causes and those affected by what he has done.”

According to the Youth Justice Resource Hub, a YRI is a type of restorative justice aimed at dealing with low-level crimes.

It allows young people to communicate about what has happened and to find a positive way forward.
