READERS have praised a dad who has been helping schoolchildren cross the road at the spot on Akers Way where his 14-year-old son was killed in a suspected hit and run crash.

Adam Parker has paid for new barriers near the Nova Hreod crossing and launched a new road safety campaign in the wake of son Harry's death. He was hit by a car as he headed to school on November 25.

Grateful parents were among those who commented on the story. Here's what they said on our social media...

Lowrie Chellem: "This isn't the first young life lost in that road - and anyone with an ounce of decency, takes their time down that road because of it's tragic history. Speeding down Akers Way is simply dancing on all those children's graves.

Martyn Pearce: "I remember the road being a 40 mph road, and still people travel that fast on it, the bridge was and still is the best solution, and the council did it once again because of money over lives."

Sarah Beckett: "Unfortunately you will always get idiots in this world and its good that the work you are doing will help, but it won't eliminate those idiots because some people just don't care about others."

Sharon O'Connell: "Anyone with a shred of decency would be reducing their speed on this road, especially near the school. That section of road needs to be reduced to 20 mph during school start and finish times."

Melanie Alford: "It has, just a lot of people don't stick to it."

Catherine Chamberlain: "Multiple speed cameras should be installed and fines should be very high if you don’t pay, lose your licence and car.

"My granddaughter goes to that school and I admire the man for doing what he is doing. I didn’t know there used to be a bridge there. Why was it removed?"

Grace Clarke: "Not all heroes wear capes. This man is just incredible. We need more people like this!"

David Donnelly: "I find it incredibly brave that this man has the guts to try and stop more accidents. He daily stands where his beloved son lost his life."

Emma Griffin: "My daughter feels safer when Adam is there. I admire his strength so much, he's absolutely incredible."

Stacey Reynolds: "Every kid in Nova will know Adam Parker as he’s Harry’s dad , he’s there every morning and afternoon making sure the kids are safe."

Samantha Willett: "The cars dropping off kids at the school hill. I see near misses a few times, so bloody dangerous. The kids entering the school should be away from all the cars. There is plenty of space to make a new drop off and and a bridge. I worry every single day my son going to school crossing that road and walking down that school hill. Akers way is full of motorists rushing to work. Last thing they're thinking of is our kids needing to cross safely to school.

Jessica Bailey: "Unfortunately, until a tragedy affects these drivers directly, they will never change their ways.

"If they are heartless enough to speed past the point where a young lad lost his life, no amount of flashing signs, road markings or banners are going to make them change their ways."

Zoe Hunt: "I cannot Imagine how much strength emotionally and mentally it must take for Adam to stand there and do all he's doing to keep the kids safe.

"I'm just sorry that not everyone has changed their stupid mentality and slowed down. I was hoping after all the publicity Akers way has had over the years due to children losing their lives people would be more aware.

"I feel insulted for you that even whilst your stood there and even with the memorial pieces still in place remembering Harry that people still speed past and rev engines.

"Please be assured all you and Kelly are doing and have done to date is appreciated by a lot of us who live around Swindon and who's children attend Nova."
