Air ambulances landed in Swindon's town centre after police closed off a busy main road where a pedestrian had been hit by a car.

The man in his 50s suffered a serious head injury and had to be taken by land ambulance to Southmead Hospital in Bristol for treatment after receiving emergency medical care from Great Western Air Ambulance and Wiltshire Air Ambulance paramedics.

Officers spent hours investigating the scene of the collision on Monday afternoon after being called at around 12.17pm.

Cones prevented traffic from entering Fleming Way from the Magic Roundabout, which caused some congestion around the many mini-roundabouts which make up the landmark as well as some queues on Drove Road and Queens Drive.

A police cordon taped off Fleming Way in both directions next to the Esso petrol station and nearby bus stop while crime scene investigators carried out their duties.

Four police cars were parked on the road while two cars and the victim's clothes remained between the cordons. At around 2.45pm, the passengers and driver of a BMW were allowed to leave in the vehicle while examination of the Audi with a broken windscreen continued.

The driver of the vehicle involved, a man in his 30s from Swindon, was uninjured. He had been driving his Audi A3 from the Magic Roundabout towards the town centre when the collision occurred.
