PREPARE to pull on your boots for a Walk to Remember through the stunning landscape of the Bowood estate to help raise cash for a Wiltshire-based dementia charity.

Alzheimer’s Support is holding its annual sponsored walk on June 10 and this time there's a new route through the historic estate near Calne.

It's one of three walks of varying difficulty. The longest is 8.5 miles up and around Battlesbury Hill near Warminster, with its panoramic views and carpets of wild flowers.

The family-friendly Meadow Mile, starting at Warminster Park, takes in the lake and nature reserve and is suitable for pushchairs and wheelchairs.

And the third, held at the invitation of the charity’s patron Lady Lansdowne, is seven miles around Bowood.

The estate is known for its breathtaking views across the capability Brown-designed gardens and as a location for TV and film costume dramas Poldark, Sanditon and the Downton Abbey movie.

Alzheimer's Support, an independent charity started over 30 years ago, is looking for people to take part and early-bird sign-ups are just £12 until the end of April.

Every walker receives a T-shirt, finisher's medal and certificate.

The charity's fundraiser Rachel Fear said: “We are delighted to be back with our fundraising walk and to introduce this beautiful new route in the north of the county.

"A Walk to Remember is a wonderful day out for the whole family and in a great cause. Please sign up and join us if you can.”

Figures show there are more than 7,000 people in the county living with dementia and only 66 per cent have a diagnosis.

The condition robs people of their memory, thinking and reasoning skills and their ability to communicate. Most of them are over 65 but the condition can affect younger people.

The charity runs a range of services all around Wiltshire to help them and their families, including Music for the Mind singing groups, day care, support at home, training for carers, memory cafes and discussion groups.

It signposts people to different services and offers dementia-awareness training to businesses and community organisations, as well as campaigning on issues that affect people with the condition or their families.
