FIRE crews have revealed they couldn't save a car that had burst into flames on a motorway slip road in Wiltshire.

Westlea Fire Station attended a fire on the exit slip at Junction 17 of the M4 motorway on April 12, alongside Swindon Fire Station Green Watch.

They were able to put the flames out, but in their own words "one private vehicle was unfortunately destroyed by the fire".

Posting about the incident on Facebook, Westlea Fire Station also shared some images showing the full extent of the damage caused to the car.

The full statement from Westlea Fire Station said: "[Thursday] Group 2 attended a vehicle fire on the Exit Slip at Junction 17 on the M4 motorway alongside Swindon Fire Station Green Watch.

"Crews used 2x BA and 2 Hose Reels to extinguish the fire. 1 private vehicle unfortunately destroyed by fire."

Even though crews from Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue were able to put the fire out and recover the vehicle, it was revealed that the fire had caused damage to the road as well.

As a result, the road heading westbound near Chippenham remained shut for some time afterwards until the road could be resurfaced.

National Highways shared a picture of the damage to the road at the time.
