Staff at a Swindon Tesco Express were forced to remove scores of frozen and refrigerated items from their shelves after a power cut.

The Rodbourne Cheney store on Cheney Manor Road was unexpectedly closed to the public on Saturday afternoon.

Eyewitnesses described on social media seeing members of staff sitting outside, and fire engines responding to the building.

Later on Saturday afternoon a spokesperson from Tesco later confirmed the power cut and the closure and said that engineers were on site trying to fix the problem.

In a statement given to the Adver, they said: "We can confirm our Cheney Manor Road Express is closed due to a technical issue. Our maintenance team is on-site and we hope to have the store open again as soon as possible.""

The same spokesperson confirmed that the store had reopened on Sunday morning.

But the damage done to the business's stock levels over the prolonged period of time without any electricity is clear to see.

Photos taken by a member of the public and shared on the Rodbourne Cheney Residents Community Facebook page show that several of the store's frozen and refrigerated shelves are now empty.

They said: "It's all gone due to Saturday's technical problems."
