A HUGE supermarket is taking over the shop of a Swindon petrol station.

Signs have gone up at the tills and in the doorway of the Dorcan Way Esso Garage to say that ASDA: On The Move is 'coming soon'.

The inside of the store at the Covingham garage, which is currently a Spar is looking quite bare as staff are removing shelving and items in preparation of the move.

When asked, a member of staff confirmed that the store was being refurbished and would be turned into an Asda.

They added they hoped this would be finished in June.

There will also be no disruption because there will be no closures while installation work takes place.

Asda has confirmed that they are opening a new store in Swindon, with a spokesperson saying: "The Dorcan Way site is set to become an Asda On the Move later this year and will bring Asda’s great value and quality in a modern and welcoming convenience store environment."

Motorists concerned they might not be able to get a pasty or coffee while fueling up also need not worry, as Asda confirmed the store will "offer a range of branded and Asda own label products as well as food-to-go partners Starbucks and Greggs."

The Asda On the Move concept was launched in October 2020 to increase the number of customers who can access the supermarket’s products in convenient roadside and neighbourhood locations.

Asda plans to have opened 200 Asda On the Move stores by the end of the year in its partnership with EG Group and reached its landmark 150th Asda On the Move store last week at Baynards Green Services in Bicester.

Euro Garages which owns the building have been approached for further comment.
