A new wine bar and restaurant has officially opened in Chippenham town centre.

The Cellar by Wine Monkey opened in Borough Parade for the first time over the bank holiday weekend, trading from Friday until Monday.

Taking to Facebook, Wine Monkey celebrated its successful first weekend in the town and revealed the bar will reopen again soon.

They said: “Spectacular first weekend. Thank you, Chippenham, for all the support and good vibes. Shall we do it again next weekend? Open this weekend.”

While no food was available over the bar’s opening weekend, customers were able to sample wines, beers, ciders, and soft drinks in the venue, which also doubles as a retail shop.

Food is expected to be available from the end of the month.

Owner Bryan Houde has previously spoken about his vision for the bar, which he hopes will be a “casual yet stylish” neighbourhood destination serving good wine and food.

On his website he said: “The Cellar will be a neighbourhood destination for good wine, good food and good people.

“There’s no snobbery here, just a passion for incredible wines, who makes them and where they come from.

“Sustainably made wines available by the glass, carafe or bottle, to have in or take away, and a selection of locally made artisan plates and nibbles to enjoy in a casual yet stylish setting.”

But Mr Houde added that, for him, the environmental impact of the business is also an important factor.

He added: “I like wine. I like good wine. And I like wine that is good for the planet.

“That’s why I choose to partner with small independent producers who understand their impact on and responsibility to the environment and to consumers.

“I love learning about wine and sharing my discoveries, and I’m excited to soon be able to share them with you!”

During their license application process, Wine Monkey revealed plans to air film screenings in the bar at any time before 11pm, although this is not planned to occur regularly.

The bar will be open again for the Coronation weekend on Friday, April 5, from 4pm to 10pm and will be serving from 12pm to 10pm on Saturday and Sunday, and until 9pm on Monday.

The Cellar’s usual opening hours will see the bar open from Wednesdays to Sundays.

On Tuesdays the bar will remain closed, but customers can use the business’s bottle shop.
