A group of Swindon neighbours have banded together to create a community garden.

The Gap garden can be found on a stretch of grass in between two homes on Carstairs Avenue and was started one year ago.

Lifelong gardener Gail Collins, from Park South, is one of the committee members for the garden.

“My friend Matthew French came up with the idea as he spotted an overgrown [area] which was full of fly-tipping and applied to the council to set it up,” she said.

“We got a committee together consisting of 12 people and it has just gone from there.

“Since I retired from the pharmacy and my husband passed away I do lots of voluntary community gardening and have always been interested in it since I was a kid.”

The 74-year-old has seen the popularity grow for the garden with younger generations now also attending.

“So far we have just put in bulbs such as daffodils and tulips but we are intending to have a wildflower area,” said Gail.

“Last Saturday 15 people attended as we built a bug house, getting kids got involved with it and the kids really enjoyed weeding the flowerbeds.”

The group meet each Saturday from 10am to 12pm with all visitors welcome to come along.
