A road in Wiltshire was at risk of collapsing after a 'void' developed under the carriageway surface.

Wiltshire Council was made aware of the potential sinkhole on Castle Eaton Bridge Road on the afternoon of Monday, July 3.

An emergency road closure was put in place to protect motorists and allow the council to further investigate the issue, where it confirmed the void.

The council has now provided an update on the situation.

Councillor Caroline Thomas, Cabinet Member for Transport said: "Fortunately, we have been able to mobilise a drainage construction team to work on this straight away and work commenced to repair the damage on Wednesday, July 5.

"We are aware of planned roadworks due to start on July 14 and that there will be more vehicle movements than normal from Wednesday 12 July. We are working to complete the repair as soon as possible.

“The cause has been identified as an old stone drainage culvert which has collapsed and is in danger of further collapse which would render the road impassable.

"The continual flooding in the Upper Thames Flood Zones may have caused the ground to subside and it is possible that additional traffic from road closures in Gloucestershire might have increased road vibrations and contributed to the collapse.”
