Police rushed to a Wiltshire village alongside explosive disposal units after reports of a potential unexploded bomb.

The suspected explosive device was discovered by a member of the public in Great Bedwyn, near Marlborough, during the afternoon of Sunday, July 23.

Officers quickly arrived on the scene after the report was made, alongside the Explosive Ordnance Disposal team.

An inspection of the suspect item was carried out and it was concluded that it was not in fact a live device.

Police then removed and safely disposed of the item.

Despite the false alarm, officers have urged people to exercise caution and always report potential explosive devices.

A spokesperson for the force said: “We would like to thank the member of public for letting us know and for sending in photos, you can never be sure until the professionals have checked it over.

“If in doubt please do still call us, better to be safe than sorry, 101 or 999 in an emergency.”

The incident comes just weeks after a suspected World War Two artillery shell was found by a group of Beavers in nearby Savernake Forest.

On that occasion, police cordoned off the scene, beside the Grand Avenue, before army explosives ordnance officers carried out a controlled explosion.
