A new community café in Swindon renowned locally for its sausage rolls has been awarded the top score for food hygiene.

Blunsdon Community Shop moved into its Blunt Rise premises on March 25 after having previously been located in a cabin on the High Street for 20 years.

The shop’s café was assessed by the Food Standards Agency following the move and the FSA’s inspection on Friday, August 4 gave a five out of five rating.

Henry Banda is the café manager and is thrilled that his team managed to earn full marks from inspectors.

“It feels so great it was a combination of work from the committee and myself and it took a while to achieve but we are very glad to get five stars,” he said.

“We hope having a good hygiene rating will bring in new people because at the moment we are just a community shop so we don’t have a massive reach outside of Blunsdon.

“So hopefully people from further afield will come to experience our café.”

Both the cleanliness and the condition of the facilities as well as the building were deemed to be very good in the report.

This includes having the appropriate layout, ventilation, handwashing facilities and pest control to enable good food hygiene.

The 21-year-old manager hopes to attract potential new customers with the café’s wide range of snacks, treats and beverages.

“We have sausage rolls, paninis, pastries and cakes so we offer a variety of food as well as drinks with coffee, tea and milkshakes,” said Henry.

“Our biggest seller are the sausage rolls which are supplied by Wrights as people come from all over to get those.”

Henry believes that the new location has only helped the business given the sheer difference in size compared to their previous home.

“We were a little cabin for 20 years but we moved over to here which has a much bigger area with a kid’s playground next to it as well as its own carpark and café,” he said.

“The new premises are great because the area is around ten times the size of the previous place.”

The café is open every day including bank holidays from 9am-4pm apart from on Sundays when it has the earlier closing time of 3pm.
