Wiltshire Police have expressed their condolences to another police force after an officer died in the line of duty.

Sergeant Graham Saville, a response officer based at Newark Police Station, sustained serious injuries when he was hit by a train as he attempted to save a distressed man.

The incident happened in Balderton just before 7pm on August 24.

Sergeant Saville was taken to Queen’s Medical Centre but, despite the best efforts of medical staff, the 46-year-old died on August 29 with his family at his bedside.

Nottinghamshire Police Chief Constable Kate Meynell said: “Today is a day of mourning for the entire police family.

“Graham was a hugely respected and popular colleague and his death in the line of duty has come as an enormous shock to us all.

“It is impossible to put into words how devastating this news is for everyone who loved and respected Graham.

“His service and sacrifice will never be forgotten. When a colleague dies in the line of duty, the shockwaves and sadness reverberate throughout the policing family.

"We will all deeply mourn our colleague.”

A Wiltshire Police spokesman said: "The thoughts of everyone at Wiltshire Police are with our colleagues in Nottinghamshire Police and the family of Sergeant Graham Saville."
