A MAN is in custody for failing to provide a breath sample after crashing his van.

The van was driven through a fence and into a field near Knook Down, Chitterne, at around 4.55pm on Monday, September 4.

Police responded to the crash and a man in his 30s was suspected of being under the influence of alcohol and breathalysed, but failed to provide.

He was then arrested for failing to provide and for being unfit to drive through drink and drugs under section 4 of the Road Traffic Act.

Then, after a search of his van, he was further arrested for possession of a Class A drug.

He remains in custody for questioning.

A Wiltshire Police spokesperson said: "Drink and drug driving is one of the Fatal Five – the five offences that significantly increase the risk of you being involved in a serious or fatal collision.

"These are speeding, drink and drug driving, using a phone while driving, not wearing a seatbelt, and careless or dangerous driving.

"If you suspect somebody of drink or drug driving, please call 101 or 999 in an emergency and give as much information as possible including a description of the driver, vehicle and direction of travel."
