Swindon railway station has been ranked as one of the worst performing railway stations in the country according to new data.

Swindon was ranked 2,545th of 2,633 stations in the UK for delayed and cancelled trains according to data collated by On Time Trains.

Across the last six months, which includes 29,774 services, less than a third of all services have arrived on time, the data shows.

It shows that a massive 64 per cent of services have been delayed, whilst four per cent have been cancelled.

Of those delays, 14 per cent have been delayed by 10 or more minutes.

Other stations in Wiltshire which ranked in the bottom 30 per cent of the nation included Pewsey, Chippenham, Dilton Marsh.

Kemble, in Gloucestershire, was also in the bottom 30 per cent.

"Swindon railway station is terrible for delays and cancellations. I’ve been to my London office three times this week, and twice I’ve been delayed which has made me late for work," said Zak Shea, a regular commuter.

"In my last role I only went into London once a month really, but even then there were problems more often than not on the days I went in."

Mr Shea has found that signal failures are the most common reason given for delays, and believes that work should be done to improve infrastructure during less busy periods.

"Government tell us to use public transport - it's farcical. It's either cancelled, delayed or diverted," added Adele Grossi.

As well as strike action, infrastructure challenges have been a key reason for delays at Swindon railway station.

This week, Network Rail imposed a heat speed restriction due to hot weather, which increased journey times of trains going through Swindon by around five to 10 mins.

Swindon railway station is managed by and served by Great Western Railway.

A spokesperson for Great Western Railway said: "We recognise how important it is that our trains arrive on time and we work incredibly hard to ensure they do.

"More than 26,000 trains have served Swindon station over the last six months, with 92 per cent of those arriving within 15 minutes.

"This is against a backdrop of almost 40 days of industrial action and action short of strike, and some significant infrastructure challenges in London and the Thames Valley.

"We continue to work with Network Rail as we seek to improve the reliability of the track, and we urge the unions to progress discussions to avoid any further, damaging strike action."

Swindon is the 177th busiest station in the country with an average of 5,894 passengers per day.
