A man has been hospitalised after suffering a “medical episode” that resulted in his car leaving the road on a busy Swindon roundabout.

Emergency services rushed to Bruce Street Bridges Roundabout, at around 8.15am on Saturday, September 16, after a single vehicle collision on Great Western Way.

A BMW left the carriageway and crashed into some nearby bushes, causing police to close the major road while response teams, including a fire crew and paramedics, attended the incident.

Police have now confirmed that the male driver of the BMW is believed to have suffered a “medical episode” and has since been rushed to hospital.

A spokesman for the force said: “We attended a collision involving a BMW at approximately 8.15am this morning on Great Western Way near the college.

“The male driver is believed to have suffered a medical episode. He was taken to hospital and the vehicle recovered.”

The incident caused heavy congestion throughout much of the morning, with roads surrounding the busy roundabout gridlocked, but traffic is now flowing freely again.
