A historic former church in Old Town currently being used as a nursery has gone up for sale.
Trinity Hall on Victoria Road, Old Town, has gone up for sale for a whopping £1.2 million.
The former church premises has been a day nursery since 2019, and estate agent Christie & Co say they want to keep it that way, although there is the “potential for other uses”.
“This is a unique opportunity to acquire this most impressive and imposing property,” a spokesperson said.
“If in the right hands, the whole of the property could be used to its full potential as a Children’s Day Nursery. Alternatively, there is huge scope and potential for other options with this property,” they added.
The church, built in 1899, was previously known as Trinity Presbyterian Church and designed by William Wallace from London. It is built of red brick with Bath stone dressings in a 13th-century style, and was made to accommodate 400 people, with schoolrooms in the basement.
In the 1950s, the church was restored after it had fallen into disrepair, and membership rose from 110 to 160.
The building is currently home to Inquisitive Minds Pre-school and day nursery, who only use the lower ground floor of the extensive, three-floor 1800s building.
But the building has a long history as a childcare setting, as it also previously housed Trinity Day Nursery, which closed suddenly in July 2019.
In 2015, the space was renovated and brought back to life to turn it into a state-of-the-art learning environment.
The renovation kept the building’s historic features such as stained glass windows and arching doorways in place, giving it a “real air of a Harry Potter theme,” according to previous Cabinet member for children’s services, Fionuala Foley.
The ground floor comprises of a main entrance, reception area, six activity rooms, and children’s and staff toilets.
There is also a separate entrance to the lower ground floor below (where Inquisitive Minds nursery is currently based), with seven activity rooms, an office, kitchen, staff room and more toilets.
The first floor, which is currently empty, has a large activity room with a vaulted ceiling, two offices, a shower room, toilet and storage facilities.
Children can also make use of the two secure outdoor play areas, which sit lower than the pavement surrounding the old church.
