A Swindon fish and chip shop has closed after it received consecutive zero ratings for its food hygiene.

Mr Cod of Cricklade Road in Pinehurst was given its first zero-out-of-five rating following an inspection on Friday, June 23.

The report stated that major improvement was necessary regarding the handling of food including preparation, cooking, re-heating, cooling and storage.

Urgent improvement was also deemed necessary for the management of food safety and the cleanliness of the building.

Mr Cod’s premises were inspected again on Wednesday, August 30, resulting in the same score while inspectors said urgent improvement was required.

The takeaway has now closed its doors temporarily following the back-to-back poor ratings published by Swindon Borough Council’s Environmental Health team.

A paper notice was stuck to the eatery’s door on Thursday morning alerting customers that the building would not reopen for a fortnight.

“Sorry, we are closed for two weeks. Thank you,” read the notice.

Following the first inspection, Mr Cod manager Juanita Fernandes claimed the boiler was the main issue.

“The boiler was broken and there was no hot water but now we have fixed it and applied for another inspection,” said the 38-year-old.

“I assure them [customers] that the hygiene will be of top-class quality despite the rating.”

The Adver has contacted Mr Cod regarding the temporary closure.
