A man has been arrested after armed police swarmed a residential street on Friday morning.

Seven police cars, as well as police dogs and a helicopter, were spotted in the Meadowcroft area of Swindon at around 9am.

A man in his 40s was arrested 'on suspicion of possession of a firearm with intent to cause fear of violence.'

There were no injuries and the suspect remains in custody.

Locals say they saw a man in bare feet being marched down Burns Way by officers that morning, placed in handcuffs and then driven away from the scene.

"We don't know what's happened. They shut the whole road off about an hour ago and we saw armed police catch one man," one person said on Friday morning.

“The road's reopened now but they're still here so I don't know if they're looking for someone else," one resident told The Adver.

Wiltshire Police has now confirmed that officers attended the address in Upper Stratton at 8.40am on Friday.

"Armed officers were deployed with the police helicopter in support. There were no reported injuries,” a spokesperson for the police said.

A team of eight officers continued to search the suspect’s property on Burns Way for over an hour, while the road remained completely taped off to members of the public.

Several passersby and concerned residents came out of their homes to see what was happening after they heard the helicopter overhead, but officers at the scene were unable to give any information at the time.

“I’ve never seen anything like it around here, especially not down that road,” said another local from across the street, who does not wish to be named.

“There was something a couple of roads down that happened a few years ago, but otherwise it’s fairly quiet around here. We don’t usually get much bother.

“I had no idea there was anything suspicious going on until this morning when I saw them catch a man. Police won’t say what’s happening,” he added.

“We all heard the helicopter,” said another elderly resident.

“I went to go and see what was going on and all I could see was armed police. It was quite frightening actually.”

However, neighbours on Burns Way appeared to be largely unphased by the dramatic scene, as they bypassed vans and ducked under police tape to pop to the shops.
