One man has been hospitalised with serious injuries after a crash closed a major road for hours on Friday morning.

Emergency services flocked to the A361 Highworth Road just after 3am after a crash involving a motorbike and car.

“We sent two hazardous area response teams, a double-crewed land ambulance, an operations officer and a rapid response vehicle,” a spokesperson from the South Western Ambulance Service said.

“We conveyed one patient by land ambulance to Great Western Hospital."

The patient has been left suffering from ‘serious injuries’, police confirmed, although emergency services were unable to reveal any more details about the exact injuries sustained.

In a statement released by Wiltshire Police, it has now been confirmed that a man was arrested on suspicion of drink diving.

"We were called by the ambulance service to a collision on Swindon Road at 3.15am this morning involving a motorbike,” said a spokesperson for Wiltshire Police.

“A closure was put in place at the roundabout by Swindon Supermarine while the incident was dealt with.

"One man was arrested on suspicion of drug driving, and causing serious injury through dangerous driving. One man was taken to Great Western Hospital," they added.

Highworth Road, which is a major route into Swindon, was closed from the time of the incident until just before 8am, and buses were forced to reroute.
