A Hollywood star features in Nationwide's new advertising campaign.

Dominic West - who played Jimmy McNulty in The Wire and Prince Charles in The Crown - appears in the building society's latest marketing effort.

A Nationwide spokesperson said: "Nationwide proudly marks its position with a hard-hitting new advert that sees Dominic West cast as an out-of-touch bank boss.

"West, who works for the fictional A.N.Y Bank, is determined to introduce cutbacks and branch closures, despite his more astute assistant questioning his decisions.

"Since Nationwide is member-owned, rather than being run for the benefit of shareholders, it can make choices like keeping branches open because they matter to its customers."

The minute-long clip starts with the bank boss asking his assistant to sign the leaving card of an employee.

West's arrogant executive boasts about how much he expensed on a big lunch, then immediately starts discussing cutbacks, hoping to keep his spacious office while removing the bank on the ground floor.

The assistant points out that Nationwide does not do that, to which he replies: "We're not Nationwide, are we? We're nothing like them."

West's character mockingly imitates one of his customers complaining that their life savings had been lost, then sees someone who might be his ex-wife walking into the Nationwide branch across the road.
