Images from Swindon Libraries' Local Studies archive capture how neighbours and motorists adapted to a sudden deluge that filled Westcott Place, Bridge Street, Fleet Street, Park Lane, and GWR Park in 1954.

In the aftermath of the unusual weather, buses and cars traversed the tricky terrain while some dapperly-dressed ladies and gentlemen braved the floodwater to pop to the shops.
