Police have issued a warning ahead of Swindon Town’s weekend clash with local rivals Newport County.

The Robins face off against their Welsh opposition at the County ground on Saturday afternoon in what promises to be an entertaining affair.

Town manager Michael Flynn faces his former side, and birth town, with the opposition arriving for the fixture in 19th place.

Swindon find themselves in ninth and have been flying high this season, only recently coming to the end of a nine-match unbeaten streak in the league.

However, off the pitch has provided just as many sparks in recent years with fans from both League Two sides making the headlines.

Chairs were thrown outside a pub in Newport by fans when the Welsh team hosted Town on February 4 this year.

Ahead of this year’s home clash, the force has been quick to assure all involved that plans are in place to ensure safety.

A Wiltshire Police spokesperson said: “We are working closely with both football clubs and other stakeholders to ensure appropriate planning is in place to allow members of the public to safely enjoy this sporting fixture."

The Robins host Newport on Saturday with kick-off scheduled for 3pm at the County Ground.
