A woman who was the first ever box office manager at the Wyvern Theatre as well as a member of the Swindon Opera for over 25 years has passed away at the age of 91.

Doris Head passed away on September 5. She left two daughters, four grandsons, one great-granddaughter, five great-grandsons as well as one great-great-grandson.

Having met her husband Ken in Portsmouth, he quickly asked her to marry him and they moved to Swindon.

When the Wyvern opened in 1971 she became the first ever Box Office Manager, a role which she stayed in until 1981.Swindon Advertiser:

Her daughter Lesley said it was a job that she adored and she was able to meet many celebrities while working at Swindon’s iconic theatre. Lesley spoke fondly of her mother and said that Doris was “always very glamorously dressed”.

As well as being a member of the Swindon Opera for 25 years, Doris modelled for Swindon College hairdressing classes and would sport different hairstyles over the years.

She loved animals and had many dogs, cats, ponies, and a donkey.  

In 2020 Doris developed Dementia and had to go into a home in Wroughton, where she was very happy.

Her funeral was held on Friday October 20 at Christ Church.
