Locals across Swindon may have heard a booming roar last week, as US supersonic bombers took off from RAF Fairford.
The bombers were just two of the four B-1B Lancer bombers currently stationed at RAF Fairford as part of a US Air Force deployment.
These long-ranged bombers are considered to be the loudest planes in the entire US Air Force.
Swindon plane enthusiasts managed to photograph the bombers taking off from their base just outside of Swindon on Thursday, October 19, 2023, as they set off towards Estonia’s capital Tallinn.
The bombers, which flew at low altitude over Freedom Square toward Lauluväljak (Song Festival Grounds), were part of a mission to show US solidarity with their Estonian Allies.
The B-1B Lancers which were spotted taking off, are long-range, heavy bombers that can carry the Air Force’s largest conventional payload of guided and unguided weapons.
The United States has provided more than $500 million in security assistance to Estonia since 2016, and regularly conducts military-to-military engagements in Estonia with U.S. personnel.
As NATO Allies, the two countries regularly train together to improve coordination and interoperability between the armed forces of both nations.
