A patch of green field on the edge of Blunsdon could see a small housing estate built as part of the Kingsdown expansion allocated in Swindon’s local plan.

Developer Turnpike Estates Ltd has asked for outline permission for the development of 10 detached houses to be sited on a triangle of land south of Kingsdown Lane between Highmead Cattery and the Flow Motors used car dealer’s site.

The application says that the site is within the Kingsdown development boundary which has seen land allocated as suitable for 1,600 houses.

It points out: “Small and medium-sized sites can make an important contribution to meeting the housing requirement of an area and are often built out relatively quickly.

“The application site is not within a conservation area, in a protected landscape or designated green belt. There are no ecological designations of note, nor protected trees of importance.”

The application by Turnpike Estates is for outline permission only. That means if it is granted details of the design and layout of the houses will be to be put in another planning application and approved before work can start.

There are diagrams and plans included with the current application for illustrative purposes only.

They show the 10 four-bed houses would be arranged around one single cul-de-sac coming south off Kingsdown Lane and curving to the east.

In the illustrative layout, each house would have a garage, with four houses having a double garage, and each house would have two parking spaces, with another two visitor spaces included.

A screen of trees and hedging plans would run between Kingsdown Lane and the houses.

The application says: “The retention and enhancement of existing vegetation around the site would reinforce enclosure from the wider landscape and reduce the magnitude of potential landscape and visual effects whilst enhancing features of the landscape.

“The dwellings can be designed and scaled to work with lifestyles and to be flexible enough so that homes can grow and evolve as family or life circumstances change.

It adds: “The design of the buildings, in terms of the form, materials and character would take account of the local vernacular and evolution of development within the village. Therefore, the character and appearance of the development itself would accord with the principles established in the village.”
