Over 400 households in Swindon have been left without power after a gas leak ignited at a busy industrial estate.

418 Scottish and Southern Electricity Network customers lost power after an unplanned outage in the South Marston area of Swindon on Thursday evening (November 9).

Homes and businesses in the area were affected at around 2.30pm, shortly after fire crews rushed to an ignited gas leak at Stirling Road, near the South Marston Industrial Estate.

The leak, which Wales and West Utilities have attributed to damage done by a third party working in the area, saw a dramatic fire burn throughout the afternoon.

After more than two hours on the scene, fire crews were able to extinguish the inferno, after the gas supply was isolated.

During this time surrounding businesses, including the Honda site, reported being without power.

At the time of writing an SSEN engineer was on the scene attempting to fix the issue, and the electricity company was hopeful power would be restored by 7.30.

A spokesperson for SSEN said: “We’re sorry for the loss of supply. We currently have a fault affecting the areas listed.

“Our engineers are on site working hard to get the power back on as quickly as they can.”
