MARLBOROUGH jockey Alan Daly was in good form at Salisbury's recent evening meeting when he rode Lord Deevert (12-1) to victory in the last race on the card.

"It's always nice to ride a winner," said Daly. "Quite a few friends turned up at the Wiltshire course and I think they had a good night.

"It was also great to ride a winner for West Country trainer Bill Turner. We go back quite a way."

  • Ogbourne trainer Peter Makin was delighted with his charge City Diamond (10-1) who won the median auction stakes for two-year-olds at Wolverhampton earlier in the week, highlighted by the trainer in Turf Talk last week.

The colt, making his second appearance on the racecourse, was five lengths clear at one stage but was eased down on the line for a comfortable victory.

The winner is part-owned by the trainer and David Poole, and after the race the Ogbourne handler said that he trained the dam and a couple of half-brothers so he knew he would handle the surface.

Makin was in the winners' enclosure again at Kempton's evening meeting in midweek when the yard's progressive sprinter Fabreze (15-8) won the six-furlong handicap, ridden by Eddie Ahern.

The three-year-old colt, by Australian sire Choisir, quickened up well and eventually won quite easily and looks a sprinter to follow.

  • Local racegoers looking for a good night out could do worse than make the short trip to Salisbury for tonight's meeting, beginning at 6.25pm with the Bathwick Tyres Lady Riders Series Handicap over six furlongs.

West County trainer Rod Millman has had quite a successful time at the Wiltshire course and Makabul, ridden by Emily Jones, could be worth an each way interest.

Top jockeys Ryan Moore, Richard Hughes and joint champion Jamie Spencer will be travelling to Salisbury from their afternoon racing venues, with Spencer likely to ride the best bet of the evening on Topazes for trainer Michael Bell.

Richard Hughes will be riding for his father-in-law Richard Hannon and could chalk up a double on Full Toss and Cape Colony.

The final race on the card is the £16,000 EBF Ladies Evening Fillies Handicap where the Roger Charlton- trained Scuffle attempts to make it three wins in succession.
