Nationwide has applied to expand its multimillion technology centre in Swindon.

The building society, which has its national headquarters in Pipers Way, has asked planners at Swindon Borough Council for permission to expand Swindon Technology Centre, off Hillmead Drive in Shaw.

It wants to build a new plant area and extend the existing area at the huge server farm.

The company says it wants the deliveries bay converted to a plant area at ground level two, and it proposes an extension of the gantry on the roof level, and a containment route through an existing opening in the side wall at ground level.

Data centres house the servers used by companies with a large online presence such as Nationwide, with its online banking used by customers to make transfers of money worldwide.

The building society, which recently had a major rebrand, announced this week it was cutting 200 jobs, including some at the Pipers Way headquarters.

In total 500 positions are at risk with 200 of those set to go. The legally-requited consultation process has begun.
