A plan to convert a shop in Broadgreen into a restaurant has been refused permission by Swindon Borough Council.

Developer H Choudhry had put in a proposal to turn the downstairs of the disused ‘Goa’ grocery store at 104 Broad Street, on the corner of Salisbury Street, into a restaurant.

He also wanted to extend the ground and upper floor, creating a large kitchen for the restaurant adding two bedrooms a new bathroom and moving a kitchen. That would have turned the three-bed shared flats into a five-bedroom HMO.

South Swindon Parish Council objected to the plan for creating another HMO in the central parts of  town and also building on the garden at the back of the property

Planners at the borough council also didn’t like the proposals: “The development would appear as an inadequately subservient addition that would fail to respect the host property. The extensions would result in excessive scale and deviation from the original property and as such would be detrimental to the character of the property.

“The development is likely to lead to emissions of both noise and odour. No assessment of the impact of noise and odour has been received and there is no evidence that emissions would be controlled.”
