A shopper is concerned about the hygiene of one of Swindon's busiest supermarkets after pigeon droppings covered the ground outside the main doors.

The anonymous resident spotted the bird poo outside Asda at the Orbital shopping centre, and said fellow shoppers were trekking the faeces into the store.

They said it made them concerned the shop was unclean.

Speaking anonymously to the Adver, the customer revealed it made them feel sick and view the Swindon shop as a danger to health.

“I shop there at least twice a week and it's being walked through the store,” they said.

“The muck has been there well over a month and it makes me feel sick that the shop is unclean and a health hazard."

The customer then allegedly attempted to make the in-store staff aware of the apparent issue but was dismissed with no solution.

“I tried to report the pigeon muck outside Asda to the customer service desk but they didn't want to know,” they said.

“Staff were not at all helpful and told me to complain online and when I asked if there was a manager I could discuss it with, I was told no.”

Asda’s Orbital superstore was awarded a zero out of five hygiene rating after being visited by Swindon Borough Council’s Environmental Health team on October 10.

The store was deemed in need of urgent improvement with the report stating that Asda staff were not managing the safety and cleanliness of its products effectively.

After a second visit by inspectors on November 20, the supermarket had its score upgraded to three out of five with the store being regarded as “generally satisfactory”.

The supermarket chain denied the claims and insisted that no evidence for the problem could be found inside the shop, adding it had received no complaints.

An Asda spokesperson said: “Whilst we’re always disappointed to receive negative feedback, we have checked with this store and cannot find any evidence of this issue inside our store, nor have we received any other complaints of this nature.

“In its most recent inspection, this store received an improved hygiene rating and we have regular robust cleaning activities carried out throughout the day to make sure the store is kept clean and tidy.

“We would ask that if any customer has any concerns, they make us aware so that we can look into it.”
