A Swindon supermarket which was given a zero rating for its food hygiene has improved after its latest inspection.

The Asda superstore at the Orbital Shopping Centre is one of the largest supermarkets in the town, serving food to thousands of people every week.

But last month it was revealed that the busy superstore had attained the lowest score following a visit from Swindon Borough Council’s Environmental Health team.

The inspection on Tuesday, October 10, deemed it so bad that it needed urgent improvement, saying that Asda staff were not managing the safety and cleanliness of its products effectively.

After facing criticism from residents, the superstore underwent another inspection on November 20 where it improved its score to a three-out-of-five.

Inspectors did not regard the conditions, cleanliness or hygienic handling of food as “very good” or “good” as a whole, but rather deemed the store as “generally satisfactory”.

Responding to the new rating, Asda believes that it reacted quickly to correct the issues that had previously caused the superstore to attain the lowly original score.

A spokesperson said: “We are pleased that having immediately rectified the issues raised by the previous inspection, the store has been issued with a new rating that better reflects the standards we expect of our stores.”
