A person who was hit by a train near Swindon train station died at the scene, police have confirmed.

The person, whose age or gender has not been confirmed, died after being hit by a train on December 30.

An air ambulance attended the scene.

British Transport Police was called to the railway line west of Swindon at 1.50pm on Saturday following reports of a casualty on the tracks.

A spokesperson for BTP said: “Paramedics also attended however sadly a person was pronounced dead at the scene.

“The incident is not being treated as suspicious and a file will be prepared for the coroner."

A spokesperson for the South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust (SWASFT) said: “We were called at 13:48hrs on Saturday 30 December to an incident near Swindon Train Station. We sent one double-crewed land ambulance, an operations officer, and an air ambulance.”

The incident caused several trains to be cancelled or delayed throughout the afternoon and evening.

A spokesperson for Great Western Railway said at the time: "It is with great sadness that we report a person has been struck by a train, leading to all lines being blocked.

"It is necessary to bring all trains in the affected area to an immediate stop. Where we can, we will divert trains to run on other lines around the affected area.
