There have been some teething problems with the council's new waste collection regime.

In November, residents were asked to start recycling food waste as well as putting plastic and metal in a blue weighted sack.

This was on top of the black wheelie bin for general waste and cardboard and glass recycling in normal boxes.

But once it was rolled out some households were having their collections missed which then became exacerbated by the Christmas period.

Now as the new year starts the council has apologised for the problems and hopes to work through the backlog.

While the hard work of the town's waste crews have been appreciated, Adver readers have shared their frustrations with the current situation with comments on the Swindon Advertiser Facebook page.

Christine Jayne Bye said: "My son is in a flat and they haven’t had their Communal bins emptied for weeks."

Varen Ezra Bridges said: "My recycling bin flew away in the wind whilst I was out shopping, even the bag knew its uses."

Daniel Adams said: "Streets are an absolute mess at the moment. They knew Christmas was coming, they should have planned better."

Tammi Cleverly said: "It’s all going in my black bin if they fail to turn up on Wednesday- food waste & recycling will have been sat on the front a week by then, and it’s just unacceptable."

Jackue Todd said: "They’re rubbish! They changed our bin day from Monday to Thursday and also went over to the new bin system.

"They didn’t let any of us know this. Strangely the houses across the road had letters in October! Fuming! "

Paul Gale said: "We’ve not had a recycling collection for 5-6 weeks and my whole street was missed when they delivered the new food boxes and blue recycling bags.

"What’s worse is the blue bag isn’t fit for purpose with an inadequate velcro strip so it easily comes loose in the wind like we saw over Christmas, resulting in plastic everywhere."

Arabella Thompson said: "Disgusted to come home from holiday to find they had not collected our general waste scheduled for Friday 22nd, Bin had been put out. Came home and went to report it to find this on their website - It's too late to report a missed collection

"To be able to return to your property, we need to receive a missed collection report by the end of the next working day after the missed collection.

"This means we cannot accept your report on this occasion and we will return on your next scheduled collection day.

"You may choose to dispose of your waste by visiting the household waste recycling centre or you may hold on to your waste until your next scheduled collection day."

Daniel Harris said: "I’ve worked out in total this year we’ve had 4 full months of missed collections -

"It happens I guess but in any other situation I could “change provider” - but Swindon Borough Council have us by the …..

"If you complain its a generic letter sent."

Louise Michelle Button said: "If it’s that bad could always book the tip. Don’t shout just an idea."

Caroline Carter-Stephens said: "In hindsight starting this new system so close to Christmas was always going to cause issues, but the high winds haven't helped and ultimately I'm sure everyone is doing their best to get on top of it and there's not a lot that moaning about it on Facebook will achieve."

Bob Lewis said: "It's been pretty smooth sailing in my street, but I can see there have been issues elsewhere."
