Police have provided an update after a dog was found roaming around the A346.

The three-year-old red Dogue De Bordeaux was spotted in the area on December 31 and was picked up by Wiltshire Police and taken to vets before being handed over to Swindon Borough Council dog wardens.

However, although he was chipped, it was not up to date, meaning officers from the Swindon North, East and Rural community policing team were unable to track down his owners.

The dog, affectionately named 'Hooch' by the local force, is now set to go a to dog rehoming charity.

A spokesperson for the Swindon North, East and Rural team provided an update on its Facebook page.

It said: "An update on our doggy tale…

"You may remember the stray Dogue De Bordeaux who was found barking and afraid near The Ridgeway on Sunday.

"He was looked after by a local vet over the weekend before being handed to Swindon Borough Council’s Animal Wardens.

"Sgt Danny Salmon, who won over the big boy to rescue him, has been catching up with his canine friend, who has been nicknamed ’Hooch’.

"Despite appeals and investigations his owner hasn’t been traced, so he will soon be going to a dog charity to find a forever home. A paw-sitive ending we hope"
