Drag Queen Story Hour returns to the Wyvern Theatre next month.

The first event, held at the town centre venue as part of last year’s Swindon and Wiltshire Pride celebrations, attracted a protest from members of a far-right group, who were vastly outnumbered by counter-protestors welcoming guests to the show.

The town and county's Pride group has now announced that Aida-H-Dee will be back entertaining audiences with a storytelling session at midday on February 4.

A spokesperson said: “Aida H Dee, the Storytime Drag Queen, will once again weave magic with stories, captivating both young and old in an exciting storytime show, tailored just for Swindon.

“Our event is a beacon of diversity, suitable for all ages, with a special appeal to children over three years old.

“Our mission remains steadfast – to demonstrate that being different is a strength, not a weakness.

“Through imaginative role models, we aim to foster a world of understanding and acceptance, one story at a time.

“Our performers, celebrated across the UK for their talent and positive impact, are excited to return to Swindon and share their love for storytelling."

Police attended the area outside the Wyvern Theatre before last June's Story Hour began to help keep the peace as members of Patriotic Alternative turned up claiming they were trying to protect children.

These protestors were then heard making homophobic remarks and suggesting the event was immoral before a large group of counter-protestors dressed in rainbow colours and bearing Pride flags drowned them out with loud music.

Parents thanked the counter-protestors as they left the venue after the event ended, and the crowds outside dispersed peacefully.

The Drag Queen Story Hour spokesperson added: “Last year, during Pride month, the Drag Queen Story Hour made headlines and captured hearts, despite facing some opposition.

“A peaceful protest highlighted the community's strong support for diversity and the importance of such events in promoting acceptance.

“Building on last year's success and the overwhelming positive response from the community, this year's event is poised to be an even more significant celebration of love and inclusivity.

“Don't miss out on this unique opportunity to join us in a joyous celebration of storytelling and diversity.”
