The heartwarming story of a community coming together to fix a vulnerable pensioner’s dangerous home has hit the headlines nationally.

Since mid-November, the Adver has reported on efforts to help 70-year-old Patricia, whose Stratton home had become riddled with mould and infested with rats after a pipe burst in the loft.

Dozens of companies offered their services for free as part of the two-month DIY project while kind Swindonians donated a total of £16,000 to the cause.

On Monday, the day Pat moved back into her newly-renovated home and spoke of her struggle to speak up about her difficult living situation, the story was also featured in the BBC News at 6 bulletin.

Swindon Advertiser: The story of Swindon coming together to repair a vulnerable pensioner's house has become national

After being mentioned as one of the top stories at the start of the broadcast, the full segment played just before the weather.

Ben Brown described the piece as “the story of how one community in Swindon came together for their neighbour” which “is really wonderful”.

Reporter Dan Johnson said: “This is community spirit, not just changing rooms but transforming a life.

“This could have been a tale of social isolation, but instead it’s a story – and a home – now full of warmth and generosity and hope.”

This Adver reporter briefly appeared on camera as Pat walked into her new kitchen.
