A man who is accused of leading police on a 57-mile chase, reaching speeds of around 137mph, has been charged with multiple driving offences.

Muneeb Mehran of Whurley Way, Maidenhead allegedly failed to stop his Volkswagen at Junction 15 of the M4 in Swindon before he proceeded to drive to Junction 8 near Maidenhead before being stopped by police.

Police said the pursuit began at around 11.55pm on Friday, January 19 and concluded at around 12.20am.

It would mean the pursuit averaged a speed of just under 137mph during the 57-mile chase - almost double the speed limit.

Thames Valley Police are then said to have "performed a car box manoeuvre involving four cars" on the Volkswagen.

The pursuit and stop was conducted by Thames Valley Police however the investigation is being undertaken by Wiltshire Police.

Mehran, 23, has been charged with failing to stop, dangerous driving, driving without insurance, driving without a licence and possession of cannabis.

He was remanded in custody and was due to appear in Swindon Magistrates Court on Monday (January 22) morning.
