Two Wiltshire hotels have been highlighted in a survey of the 50 best family hotels in the UK.

The Woolley Grange Hotel in Bradford on Avon which gets a 9/10 rating in the survey by The Telegraph national newspaper, and the Lucknam Park Hotel in Colerne gets 8/10.

The experts say the 17th-century Woolley Grange is a firm favourite with families visiting Bath and the Wiltshire countryside.

It says: "Offering both country manor relaxation and child-focused fun, it proves that the two need not be mutually exclusive.

“The multi-gabled house has a 'lived-in' feel that puts families at ease. No opportunity is missed to entertain little ones, granting parents precious time with a book or a drink by the fire in the lounge.

“In the outbuildings there’s a sensory room for babies, an Ofsted-listed creche and a den for older children. The gardens, meanwhile, are home to chickens, a newt-filled pond, a scarecrow, giant tree swing and a fairy garden.

“The indoor pool (where children are allowed at any time) and spa overlook the hotel's walled vegetable garden.”

The survey adds: “The extraordinary raft of services includes everything from extras for rooms, like fridges and potties; to massages and babysitting. Baby bottles are sterilised overnight and a baby-monitoring service gives parents time alone in the evening.

Special activities laid on during school holidays include scavenger hunts, archery, cooking with chef, football matches, films and pond dipping.

“An outdoor pool is heated in summer. Staff are helpful and attuned to a family’s needs.

“Like its sister members in the Luxury Family Hotels range, Woolley Grange is ideal for young children: 90 minutes at the on-site crèche are included in the price of a room and the clever monitor service means parents can dine while children sleep upstairs. Kids will love the indoor pool – parents perhaps less so – but this is a hotel designed for young children.”

The Woolley Grange Hotel also offers a complimentary milk butler service with warm, fresh milk delivered direct to its 25 rooms and suites.

An Ofsted-registered crèche and the Woolley Bears' Den offer a range of activities including playhouses, dressing up clothes, a train set, children’s library and a range of toys as well as themed activities using indoor and outdoor spaces

In addition, there is a Hen House for older children, with a pool table, air hockey and table football.

Prices are from £92 per night, doubles from £130 a night, including breakfast. Free Wi-Fi. Not suitable for disabled people.

The survey says the stunningly-set Lucknam Park Hotel has on-site stables with guests able to bring their own horse or borrow one.

It states: "Other attractions include a cookery school, 500 acres to pootle around, and a spa with a pool that has children’s hours, plus bicycles, board games and a spectacular play cottage filled with toys and activities (though children must be accompanied by an adult).

"The fine brasserie has a children’s menu, and the Michelin-starred restaurant is a treat and welcomes little ones over the age of five. There is a playroom and a playground for children too.

"Some larger rooms are interconnecting and others have lounges with sofa beds or cots. A babysitting service is available."

Sakis Dinas, general manager of Lucknam Park, said: “We are thrilled to be included within The Telegraph’s list of best family-friendly hotels in the UK.

"We constantly strive to provide our family guests with the most cherished memories such as horse riding adventures at the Equestrian Centre or quality time roaming our beautiful woodlands.

"This year is set to be one of the most exciting for families with the arrival of two new standalone cottages ensuring guests can enjoy the space and privacy of a home combined with our outstanding hotel services and facilities.”
