A driver has been arrested after he filmed himself speeding down the M4 at 160mph in the middle of the day, police have said.

Wiltshire Police said they were made aware of a video posted on social media by a man in his 30s which appeared to show him driving a black Nissan GTR between Junctions 16 (Swindon West) and 18 (Bath) at more than double the speed limit at around 12.45pm on Sunday, January 28.

After investigating the footage, officers arrested the motorist on Tuesday night on suspicion of dangerous driving and seized his vehicle for examination.

He has since been released under investigation while enquiries continue.

Police are appealing for witnesses who saw the vehicle to get in touch and assist in their investigation.

Sgt Ben Cox said: “This is completely unacceptable.

“Driving at speeds like this can so easily end in disaster as you have no time to respond to anything.

“We will not tolerate dangerous driving like this on our roads and we will ensure that those who do are found and brought before the courts.

“If you witnessed this behaviour on the M4 then please get in touch with us on 101 or via our website quoting reference 54240011186.”
