As plans are submitted to convert an historic pub on Swindon's outskirts, let's look back at some nostalgic images from its past.

Last week, the Adver reported on plans by Lea and Sarah Carter to turn The Plough Inn on Lechlade Road in Highworth into a single family home by renovating the interior of the building.

The building was originally two cottages - one with a half-timbered front which was the pub itself, and the other as the landlord’s accommodation.

For decades, punters regularly visited the popular Arkell's pub and it remained a social hub for Highworth throughout the 20th century and the early years of the 21st.

Arkell's Brewery closed the pub in March 2023 as the business became unprofitable due to steep competitions from other public houses, and the licence to sell alcohol from the premises was then removed.

Photos from the Adver archive show several black and white snapshots of the Plough Inn from the 1960s, a colour image from the 1980s, and a more recent photo from 2019.

The property comes with a detached barn which was used as storage for the pub, as shown in another image of the rear of the building.
